ASKED QUESTIONS OF CHIROPRACTORS
Will the treatment hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments usually do not hurt - there may be some short-lived
discomfort, which quickly passes for most patients.
Do Chiropractors use X-rays?
Any decision to take x-rays will
be made at the time of consultation. x-rays are used to firstly ensure
the patient no harm, ruling out any contraindications to treatment, and
to identify if the condition can be treated effectively by chiropractic.
All registered chiropractors are highly trained to take and interpret
x-rays ensuring safe effective treatment.
How long will it take to
fix my problem?
All current research states that chiropractic is exceptionally effective
if the condition is treated within the first 6 weeks of the injury. The
longer you leave the problem, the longer it may take to come to a successful
resolution. Your chiropractor will advise you on the management of your
condition and how to minimise the chances of it reoccurring.
Do
I have a Slipped Disc or a Prolapsed Disc?
Discs
are the pivotal axis of movement of each vertebrae. They are composed
of 70% of ligament (outer layer) and 30% of a jelly like material (inner
core). The discs have roots that attach to the vertebrae above and the
vertebrae below. Therefore, the discs do not, and cannot slip, they can
actually bulge or protrude. The protruding/bulging
discs can affect the spinal cord and or the nerves that are positioned
behind and to the side of the discs respectively.
As a result of the repeated macro/micro traumas we all experience (wear
and tear), the structural elements of the vertebrae/joint weaken predisposing
the vertebrae to move in an incorrect biomechanical position. Due to this
misaligned vertebrae, the disc will be under a great degree of stress
ultimately promoting
the disc to protrude and affect the sensitive nerves causing pain.
Your chiropractor utilising the Gonstead method specialises in the treatment
of these injuries (see also Vertebral
Subluxation Complex).
Lumbago
A generic term used to
describe Back
Pain and Sciatica.
Difference Between Chiropratic
and Osteopathy?
Chiropractors are trained differently and also have different techniques.
In general terms chiroprators tend to focus on nerve and joint function.
Chiropractors are specially trained to take and interpret X-rays which
osteopaths are not. Both proffessions have statutory
regulation.
Spinal Surgery
Back surgery is an invasive procedure and should only be considered as
the last option. There are cases in which surgery is required and your
Gonstead
Chiropractor will be able to recognise and refer to the appropriate
medical specialist.
Is Chiropractic safe for
the Pregnant Patient?
Chiropractic is the treatment of choice for expectant mothers and is very
safe. Special methods are used in order to assure safety and comfort.
Is Chiropractic helpful
and safe for the newborn baby?
Chiropractic is very safe and effective in treating the newborn baby.
Conditions successfully treated are: colic, restlessness, enuresis, difficulty
passing stool, and sleeping problems.
